Military Origins

Fort Collins began as a U.S. Army military fort established in 1864 along the Cache la Poudre River, originally built to protect settlers and travelers along the Overland Trail. The fort was named after Lieutenant Colonel William O. Collins. After the military post was decommissioned in 1867, the settlement grew into an agricultural community and was incorporated as a town in 1873.

Old Town Historic District

The heart of Fort Collins’ preserved history is the Old Town Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its late-1800s and early-1900s buildings have been beautifully maintained, and the district famously inspired Disney designer Harper Goff, a Fort Collins native, in his design of Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.
